Those believing in evolution, can you tell me about the evolution of a horse?

I don't have a detailed science book here right now and would like to know what the forerunner of a horse looked like. I know that man looked like an ape like being. and maybe more ape than a present day man. So what did a thoroughbred horse (like the ones that run in the Kentucky Derby) look like? Can you give some sort of description?
